Demoiselle is a charming little narrowboat with bags of character – ideal as a starter boat or a compact, easy-to-handle cruiser.
Built in 1984, this pretty, 23ft navy, red and cream Springer Waterbug has lots of clever design to maximise living spaces, providing charm as well as practical storage and utilities.
She’s entirely wood-lined inside, making a warm, cosy space. You enter via three steps at the stern, under which is a locker storing the batteries. To the right is a Boatman wood-burning stove with seating opposite and next to it. There's plenty more storage under the seats, as well as in lockers for fuel and anything else that extend under the stern deck to the side of the seats.
The middle of the boat contains a galley with four gas rings, a sink and food cupboards. Opposite is a large storage cupboard plus a separate loo: the cupboard and loo doors fold outwards and lock in place to create privacy when you need it.
The forward saloon provides a table with seating, including storage under the seat and more under the bow, where the water tank is also located. The saloon table converts into a double bed. Demoiselle can sleep up to three: two at the front and one at the stern, where the seating opposite the stove also converts into a single berth.
Technical matters: the boat was last blacked in 2021 at Stanstead Abbotts marina and has a Boat Safety Certificate to 2027. It has a leisure battery and starter battery, both charged by going along. The stove glass and fire rope (creates airtight seal around glass in the stove door) were renewed September 2025.
Overall a really pretty, well designed boat for cruising and exploring.
